On August 17, the United States celebrates National Nonprofit Day, a special day that shines a spotlight on the social sector and honors all the nonprofit organizations that work tirelessly to make this world a better place.<\/p>\n

A nonprofit is defined as an organization that is not driven by profit but by dedication to a given cause. A nonprofit\u2019s goal is to nurture and further its mission. Because any surplus profits after operating expenses are reinvested into the organization, nonprofits normally enjoy a tax-exempt status.<\/p>\n

While many believe that nonprofits are a relatively new concept, they have been around for 126 years since the 1896 Tariff Act, which exempts nonprofits from federal income tax, was passed.<\/p>\n

The nonprofit torch was further carried on when National Volunteer Week was created in 1974 to recognize volunteers and their power to tackle society\u2019s greatest challenges.<\/p>\n
